![]() The OVA that inspired the con’s founders plays somewhere both at the start and at the end of each con. The video selections are often also a good mix of premieres, mainstream and oddball picks, with the one constant being Otaku no Video. The dealers room and artists alley are famously gigantic, and being in a region saturated with art schools, the cosplay is frequently daring. They’ll have the Yoshida Brothers or a rakugo comedian or swordmakers or a Shinto priest. They also often experiment within the bounds of their mission. And though the con doesn’t do sponsorships the same way AX or Anime NYC might, they still have a great relationship with industry and guests. And with maybe a couple exceptions over the years, there is no VIP status for anything and there are no events behind a velvet rope. Otakon is extraordinarily well run and even though it’s big, it doesn’t feel too corporate like AX. ![]() If you’re interested in a smaller, more personal one, this is an excellent convention, especially if you have any interest in coming to Kansas City at some point. They get some pretty good guests there too, and they have plenty of cool panels. So it may be dwarfed by the bigger conventions but it’s a total blast if you go with some friends. I don’t know whether or not it’s worth traveling to considering the smaller scale of it compared to ones in the huge cities since I have nothing to compare it to really. They have about every major arcade rhythm game except Beatmania it seems like. They have a bunch of Pump it Up and DDR Machines, they have Pop’n Music, they have Sound Voltex, Chunithm, Project Diva, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, DBZ FighterZ, a shit ton of retro arcade games, Pachinko, setups with various consoles with a selection of games to choose from to play, etc. The arcade setups they have are super cool as well. The convention center it’s at is also surrounded by various hotels meaning there’s plenty of places to stay for almost any price range. It’s not the biggest anime convention but it’s really well organized, they have lots of merch, the staff are extremely pleasant, most the guests keep to themselves or are friendly and there’s plenty of resources available if there are any issues. ![]() It’s a really nice convention and it’s not super far (like only a 35-40 min drive) from downtown Kansas City, which is a city worth visiting, nearby anime convention or not. Only one I’ve been to is Naka Kon in Overland Park. Highlighted cons are supermajors with a historical attendance of over 30000 and have significant industry support.
